“How do we want to live?”

“What should we do?”

To bring together these two fundamental questions with Christian faith is one of the maior tasks of moral theology. Prof. Dr. Klaus Arntz and his team at the Chair of Moral Theology at Augsburg University are engaged furthermore in fundamental moral topics such as: “What is autonomy?” “Where are its limits?” “What is quality of life?” “What is morally required for making good and right decisions?”

The scientific research at the Chair focuses its work on fundamental moral theology but also on fields like bioethics, rational choice theory and the history of moral theology.

Currently, the research activities at the Chair concentrate on the following two projects:

  1. “Ethics of ignorance. A theological-ethical offer”. This project is sponsored by the DFG (=Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft). For further information see: http://www.kthf.uni-augsburg.de/prof_doz/arntz/dfg_ar_629_1-1/
  2. „MEFES“ – A Concept for Ethical Case Discussions. This project is put into practice in several hospitals (such as Zentralklinikum Augsburg etc.)
The Chair of Moral Theology takes part in the theological formation of future roman-catholic priests of the diocese of Augsburg, the education and pastoral workers as well as in the university teachers’ training (primary and secondary school). The moral theologians at Augsburg University supervise academic theses: qualifying works (=Zulassungsarbeiten), diploma in theology and diploma in environmental-ethics, dissertations as well as habilitations.

Prof. Dr. Klaus Arntz has been ordinary professor for moral theology at Augsburg University since 2001. After completing his studies at the Münster University and at the Pontificia Universitas Gregoriana in Rome (lic. theol.) he did his doctorate on the subject “Unbegrenzte Lebensqualität? Bioethische Herausforderungen der Moraltheologie” (Münster 2002) and qualified as a University lecturer with his thesis “Melancholie und Ethik. Eine philosophisch-theologische Auseinandersetzung mit den Grenzen des sittlichen Subjektseins im 20. Jahrhunderts” (Regensburg 2003) at Münster University.
