Chair for Dogmatics, Catholic-Theological Faculty of the University of Augsburg
- Dogmatics belongs to the circle of systematic subjects within catholic theology. Its cognitive interest lies in the scientific reflection on the Christian faith in its wholeness as it is witnessed by the teaching and life of the Church. Dogmatics aims at a comprehensive hermeneutics of the Christian faith defining the content of this faith, outlining the historic development of the Depositum Fidei and pursuing a modern speculative deepening of the dogmatic statements. Dogmatics draws on all acknowledged theological sources, in particular the Bible, tradition and ecclesiastical magisterium.
- In respect of methodology Dogmatics works with the results of exegetical research, provided that the Bible is adhered to as the ultimate norm of theological knowledge. Dogmatics not only aims to process the results of the historical disciplines but is also involved in an intensive dialogue with philosophy, while attempting to achieve a synthetic explanation of and reflection on the content of the religious creed.
- Being a theological discipline (in contrast to systematic religious science) Dogmatics, in dealing with the content of the religious creed (fides quae creditur) , is always committed to the vivid personal act of faith (fides qua creditur) performed of a Christian believer in the community of the church. Dogmatics, irrespective of its scientific methodology, is therefore understood to make a valuable contribution towards this religious community.
- Dogmatics is subdivided into the following treatises: Theological Epistemology, Doctrine of God, Doctrine of Creation (including Theological Anthropology), Christology, Soteriology, Mariology, Ecclesiology, Sacramental Theology, Theology of Grace and Eschatology. These treatises contain the central content of the Christian creed.
- The Chair for Dogmatics at the University of Augsburg does research mainly in the fields of Trinitarian Theology, Christology, Theology of Grace, Medieval and Early Modern scholasticism and pursues projects in the border area of theological and secular history of the 20th century.
